For a description the seemingly unfathomable Japanese patent publication numbering system see the article by John Ridland, Johnson Matthey.
The Japanese Patent office has improved its free machine translation
facility, converting Japanese patents into English for free at the click of a
few buttons. Thanks to Phillip Gee at Rolls Royce and Pam Toplis at Avecia
for hunting down the new URL for this.
The main page leading into patent searches is here
or you can go directly to the search page here.
To perform searches of Japanese patents,
click on the grey button on the top right -> ,
input the number, search. When the abstract appears, click on the
button to get the
machine translation into English. If it doesn't work, try selecting a
different radio button as the Japanese numbering system is very confusing.
Radio buttons on JPO site:
Application
number Publication number Patent
number
Number of appeal against
examiner's decision of rejection
For example, go to http://www.ipdl.ncipi.go.jp/homepg_e.ipdl, click on, PAJ, select
|
||
enter your
query, for example 11-267793 in the publication number box.
You
have then a line with the number and title of the invention. Click on it
to
have the abstract with representative drawings and, click
on the orange
button for the translation into English.
If you want to do text searches go here for the page similar to that shown below:
